On September 24th, 1998, the Government of Canada officially proclaimed the last Sunday of September of every year as the Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day.

On January 17th, 2003, a nation-wide half-masting was included in the new half-masting rules. The flags will be half-masted on all federal buildings and establishments in Canada, including the Peace Tower, from sunrise to sunset on the Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day.

On May 23rd, 2003 the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador officially proclaimed the last Sunday in September of every year as Newfoundland and Labrador Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Day. The Provincial Memorial Day gives Newfoundlanders and Labradorians an opportunity each year to formally express appreciation for the dedication of police and peace officers who made the ultimate, tragic sacrifice while protecting our property, natural resources and keeping our communities safe.
